Lake Kournas, the only natural lake in Crete, is an ideal destination for an afternoon walk or a short day trip. Samaria, or the Samaria Gorge, is one of the most impressive and popular attractions in Crete. This beautiful gorge, called simply “the gorge” by the locals in admiration of its beauty and to distinguish it from the smaller gorges of Crete.
Located in western Crete, in the heart of the White Mountains. At 18 km long, it is the largest gorge in Europe. The trail starts from Xyloskalo (elevation 1,227 m) on the Omalos plateau and ends in the seaside village of Agia Roumeli.
