Near Chania

Knossos, known as Ko-no-so in Linear B texts of the 14th century BC, is a central part of Minoan civilization. It was discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos, while the excavations by Arthur Evans (1900–1931) revealed the palace, the city, and the cemeteries.

The route from Rethymno mainly passes through the impressive Kourtaliotiko Gorge, which is 2 kilometers long.
