Preveli Monastery and its surrounding area, with the sandy beach and its famous gorge, are a must-visit during your stay in the Rethymno region.
You can reach Preveli by vehicle, via a short walk of about 30 minutes, or by boat from the sea.
The route from Rethymno mainly passes through the impressive Kourtaliotiko Gorge, which is 2 kilometers long. The name of the gorge is said to originate from the characteristic creaking sound of the rocks when a north wind blows through the narrow passage, giving the landscape a unique, mystical atmosphere.
