Samaria, or the Samaria Gorge, is one of the most impressive and popular attractions in Crete. This beautiful gorge, called simply “the gorge” by the locals in admiration of its beauty and to distinguish it from the smaller gorges of Crete.
Located in western Crete, in the heart of the White Mountains. At 18 km long, it is the largest gorge in Europe. The trail starts from Xyloskalo (elevation 1,227 m) on the Omalos plateau and ends in the seaside village of Agia Roumeli.

Hiking through the gorge offers unique views of steep cliffs and dense vegetation, while the area hosts Crete’s rich wildlife, including the Kri-Kri (Cretan wild goats), various birds, and small mammals.
